When politicians fail, We must take up the slack!

I am back again with new alerts from Avaaz and 38Degrees, both of them very important.

We want to end the senseless violence between Israel and Palestine. Although Netanyahu was considering a ceasefire brokered by Egypt, (having ignored Obama’s offer), Hamas refused to accept it as they we not consulted beforehand. Their stance is perhaps not so unreasonable when you consider that they are the legitimately elected government in that country, and to ignore a government completely under these circumstances is offer a gross insult.

Nevertheless, the result is more bombardment, and exactly this is what needs to be stopped!
AvaazThe idea from Avaaz, which I totally support, is to persuade companies doing business with Israel to stop, and thus make a financial penalty the cost of their further aggression.

“Dear friends,

A new round of violence in Israel-Palestine has already killed over180 people including 36 children. It’s not enough just to call for another ceasefire. We need to end this decades-long nightmare by taking definitive non-violent action.

Our governments have failed — while they have talked peace and passed UN resolutions, they and our companies have continued to aid, trade and invest in the violent status quo. The only way to stop this hellish cycle of Israel annexing Palestinian lands, daily collective punishment of innocent Palestinian families, Hamas firing rockets, and Israel bombing Gaza is to make the economic cost of this conflict too high to bear.

We know it works — when EU countries just advised their companies not to invest in the illegal Israeli settlements it caused an earthquake in the cabinet, and when citizens successfully persuaded a Dutch pension fund, PGGM, to withdraw, it caused a Foreign Ministry internal crisis.

This can save lives, not just now, but for years to come. History tells us that raising the financial cost of oppression can pave a path to peace. Click to call on key businesses to uphold the law and stop financing the violence — if we all take smart action now and turn up the heat, we can turn the calculation of the extremists and warmongers profiting from this misery upside down.”

38degreesAnd from 38Degrees, we have a new opportunity to stop the use of neonicotinoids, the pesticides that are killing bees, and other wildlife.

If you need background information on this, you could go to “Ban neonicotinoids now – to avert another silent spring

or to the 38Degrees info here.

With Owen Patterson no longer capable of wreaking havoc, we want to make sure that we get off on the right foot with his replacement!

“Owen Paterson wasn’t a friend of the bees – in fact he put them in huge danger by backing bee-killing pesticides. But if Liz Truss knows that the British public want her to do everything she can to protect bees, she could plough a different furrow.

Our bees don’t have a voice, but that’s where 38 Degrees members come in. Together we have helped fight for their survival. Just a few weeks ago we helped stop a controversial application to allow bee-killer pesticides back on UK fields. And we’ve worked alongside campaigners from across Europe to get these killer pesticides banned.

If bees go – so do we. Can you sign the card to Liz Truss now? The more people who sign, the more impact it will have. Imagine receiving a card signed by thousands of people!”

New Alerts from Avaaz and 38Degrees!

AvaazThe Global People’s Climate March – September 21st, 2014

What is wrong with the following picture?

There is one thing that is very conspicuous by its absence – there is no sign of activity in England!

Perhaps its too early yet, and people are waiting to sign up?

Well, I will be checking from time to time, and will keep an eye on the situation. We cannot afford to ignore this matter completely, it is too important for all of us. And we know that we can get things done when enough people demonstrate their solidarity behind a project.

If you want to sign up now, go to Global March

38degreesThere is a new request from 38Degrees.

Apparently Syngenta are attempting to persuade the British government to ignore the EU ban on neonicotinoids, and allow their use in the UK. The bees would not thank us for that – they have taken a big enough bashing as it is.

Don’t forget that these pesticides are part of the “Triple Whammy” that is causing us problems with our farmland.

A cabinet decision is expected on Tuesday, so we don’t have long to act.

Please add your name to the petition:

“Bees pollinate apples, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, cauliflowers, onions, cabbages, broccoli, carrots and many many more of our fruit and veg.”

Without bees, we wouldn’t last very long!
