The proposed 38Degrees Recall Bill.

38degrees“Hot off the press: our draft recall law is back from the lawyers. It’s the law that would make it possible for voters to sack MPs who have behaved badly. Thousands of 38 Degrees members chipped in to make possible.”

In keeping with normal 38Degrees practice, members are given the chance to voice their opinion on what is being proposed. The main thing is that this draft bill would put the Recall function in the hands of the voters, where it belongs.

“The big difference between their draft law and ours is that theirs puts a committee of MPs in charge – while ours put voters in the driving seat. Our draft law has a lot of detail. Several MPs and other organisations, like Unlock Democracy and Taxpayers Alliance, have also been involved. This is to make sure that the government can’t ignore it by saying it wouldn’t work in practice.”

“The more people who fill in the poll, the more likely MPs will listen to us, as we’ll be representing the wishes of the people they need to listen to, their voters.”

“The sooner we’ve approved our draft law – the better position we’ll be in to stop the government pushing through their sorry excuse for a recall law.”

If you need more detail, there are two sources of information:-
1. A description from their blog at RECALL DRAFT BILL

2. a PDF file of the full draft text at Recall of MPs Bill (Draft)

We don’t want half-measures here – we need to get this right!

New Alerts from Avaaz and 38Degrees!

AvaazThe Global People’s Climate March – September 21st, 2014

What is wrong with the following picture?

There is one thing that is very conspicuous by its absence – there is no sign of activity in England!

Perhaps its too early yet, and people are waiting to sign up?

Well, I will be checking from time to time, and will keep an eye on the situation. We cannot afford to ignore this matter completely, it is too important for all of us. And we know that we can get things done when enough people demonstrate their solidarity behind a project.

If you want to sign up now, go to Global March

38degreesThere is a new request from 38Degrees.

Apparently Syngenta are attempting to persuade the British government to ignore the EU ban on neonicotinoids, and allow their use in the UK. The bees would not thank us for that – they have taken a big enough bashing as it is.

Don’t forget that these pesticides are part of the “Triple Whammy” that is causing us problems with our farmland.

A cabinet decision is expected on Tuesday, so we don’t have long to act.

Please add your name to the petition:

“Bees pollinate apples, cucumbers, strawberries, tomatoes, cauliflowers, onions, cabbages, broccoli, carrots and many many more of our fruit and veg.”

Without bees, we wouldn’t last very long!

Recall: Put power in voters hands

There is a new petition on 38Degrees to try to get a usable “Recall” system working. I signed it, and was immediately asked to spread it around.
To be of any value at all, the Recall facility must be under the control of the constituency that votes an MP in.

Cameron’s last attempt to fudge this demand by putting Parliament in charge was thankfully blown out.

The recent election results have the major parties in a turmoil, and they will be amenable to making concessions in order to win back supporters.

We need to use that advantage – strike while the iron is hot – and thrust as big a petition as we can possibly muster under their noses before complacency sets in and everything reverts to the status quo.

The text from 38Degrees is as follows:-
“The government is making plans to announce new powers to sack – ‘recall’ – MPs who don’t do their job properly.

But their plans could put the power to sack MPs in their colleagues’ hands – not their constituents. This isn’t good enough.

Together, we can build a HUGE people-powered petition to get real recall – so if enough people wanted to hold a by-election to sack their MP in between elections, they could.”

Here is the link to the petition!

After you have signed up,

Please spread the word as far as you possibly can!

Want Gainful Employment? Do Something About It!

It would have been better for all of us if the miserable sinner that came up with the idea of Zero Hours contracts had been shot at birth. Unfortunately, he or she wasn’t, and we are left to deal with the consequences.

Representations have already been made to the British government, but apparently not enough. It seems that we have a case of “the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing” – (something I have long suspected) – and while one part is considering a proposal to outlaw these diabolical devices altogether, another part is insisting that jobseekers must accept them, or lose benefits.

And we pay these idiots?

We must be crazy too!

As far as the government is concerned, even if you have only a Zero Hours contract, you are “employed”, and their unemployment figures look so much better as a result. The fact that you might be starving to death apparently has no bearing on the matter whatsoever.

Now, I am going to give you some links to relevant sources of information. At the end of the list comes a petition that you can sign.

Before you sign the petition, take careful note of the following:-

    1. Do NOT just sign up by filling in the blanks and clicking on “Send”. Key to the success of the Vermonters was the conviction that demands came from real people with real grievances. See my post “Vermont – GM Armour Cracks at Last!”

    2. You have been given an opportunity to contact one of the prime movers in this situation directly – dont waste it

    3. If you don’t like the title, change it to something you would prefer –
ie. from “Unfair to push jobseekers into zero hours contracts”
to “Zero Hour Contracts must be Outlawed”

    4. There is apparently no limit (at least I haven’t found one yet) to the amount of text you can write. Use the space to the best advantage for you. If you think that your life story would help, put it in. However, I think your present circumstances would be more relevant to the situation than where you went to school.

    5. Remember, you have the task of convincing a total stranger that you are a real person in need of help. I don’t pretend it will be easy, but do the best you can!

    6. Read this, which came from 38Degrees:

“Finding work is becoming increasingly hard. Most people just want a job that’s secure with a regular wage. But being forced to take a job on a zero hours contract could jeopardise that. If you don’t know what days you’re working from week to week, it’s hard to arrange interviews for a more secure role.

Last year lots of 38 Degrees members shared their personal experiences of zero hours contracts. It was pretty shocking. Some had been forced to work extra hours for free. Some were threatened with reduced hours for taking a day off sick. Some were disciplined for questioning these bullying tactics.

For some, zero hours contracts offer flexibility and the perfect way of working. But for others, ‘flexibility’ actually means job insecurity and exploitation.”

Now for that list:-

Benefits risk to jobseekers refusing zero-hours contracts
Jobseekers face losing benefits if they refuse zero-hours contracts
Zero hours: Update
End abuse of zero hours contracts with no work guarantee – Vince Cable to announce
Jobseekers being forced into zero-hours roles
Number of zero-hours contracts reaches 1.4m

I know its a lot of work, but it has to be done if you want to succeed.

Now the Petition:-

Stop zero hours contracts being forced on jobseekers

After you have done that, start a new petition on 38Degrees:-

Put all Members of Parliament on Zero Hours contracts
and make them Exclusive, so they can’t find work elsewhere!

Lets Hear it for People Power!

People Power is a watchword in the Philippines, where the Edsa revolution of 1986 brought the government down.Edsa

In China, however, Tiananmen Square is not a happy memory of success, but a stark reminder of what can happen when things go drastically wrong.

In either case, a revolution is an extremely disruptive event, which, under normal circumstances we would strive to avoid if at all possible.

This is certainly possible. We use the PETITION!

Petitions used to be very difficult to organise; slow, bulky, (boxes and boxes of paper), and always prone to challenges. Had signatures been duplicated, were petitioners actually who they said they were, etc.?

The power of the mouse has changed all that!

The on-line petition may be open to the same challenges as the paper ones, but they are fast to organise, easy to sign up to, and above all peacefully effective.

There is no chance of recrimination – nobody can label you as a terrorist for signing a petition – and the minimum number of signatures can be reached in only a couple of days.

This means that petitions can be used in response to changing events, and are as near to real-time reaction as we can currently achieve.

Let me introduce you to the petitions I use!

Avaaz, which with a membership of over 35 million, has worldwide reach, and 38Degrees, which is UK oriented only. I have asked for information on current membership.

Both are funded exclusively by members, so there is no unwarranted interference from anywhere.
Both allow you to start your own petition, and will help you with it if needed.
Both are run democratically, with regular polls to decide future direction.

To put this in perspective, Avaaz membership at the moment is about the same as the current population of Canada, and more than the population of 205 other countries on the list (Wikipedia).

Imagine what 35 million likeminded souls can achieve when they really go for it!

What can you do?

Sign up to Avaaz if you are not in the UK. If you are in the UK, sign up to both!

38Degrees already has the respect of various MP’s, and gets thing done!

The power of AVAAZ is already legendary!

Once you get to a million signatures, things start to happen!
